Elsie Kinghorn Carolan
Aunt Elsie's Journal

Oct 7, 1927.

Left Milan for Venice at 2:30.  While in dining car someone stole my fur coat out of compartment.  Mr. Lewis told guards and they asked a million questions.  When we arrived at Venice at 8:30 they took us to police station and we had to show our passport, give description of coat, etc.  I'm just sick about it.  I feel right now as if it has spoiled my whole trip for I need the coat so much.  We were met at the station by gondolas.  Went to Victoria Hotel--very large.  Many winding passages.  All marble floors, windows overlook canals.  As I write, I can hear the gondolieros calling to one another.  They have no bells or horns, so when nearing a turn they howl at one another.

Venice. Oct 8, 1927.

Up about 8:30.  I wakened a million times in the night, and each time mourned for my lost coat.  Walked to St. Mark's Square and here we saw an interesting sight--tourists and natives were feeding corn to the hundreds of pigeons in the square!  They are so tame they perch on your hand or arm to eat out of your hand.

Venice. Oct 9, 1927.

Went to church at St. Mark's.  High mass, wonderful male chorus.  Mobs of people going and coming during mass.  Met the bunch at 11:30 and took steamer to Lido, which is on the Adriatic Sea.  Had lunch at Grand Hotel which is on the beach.  After lunch, the McDonalds, Richers, Christine, Ethel, Mr. Lott and "we uns" went down to the beach and went in wading.  Had oodles of fun.  Back to Venice in time for dinner.

Lido is so different from Venice--at Venice there are no trees or green grass except away at one end of town where they have a park.  All you see are narrow streets and canals.  414 bridges.  They do not allow automobiles or bicycles either.  At Lido, there were autos and bicycles, grass, gardens and lots of trees.  The people of Venice and Lido seem much more friendly than at Milan--one doesn't see so many rough looking people.

After dinner we went to Luna Cabaret.  Met some Venetian officers in Navy.  They danced with us a lot.  They could speak a very little English.  Got home after one o'clock.
