ancient Cerchi castle. The noble Spagnoli family lived on this
land for
many generations before moving to Florence in the 12th
century. Castello Rufina is located on a hill in the heart of
"Rufina
Chianti", in the Santa Maria district, and is made up of a fine
square-shaped stone-walled mansion, built over the foundations of the
ancient
Cerchi castle which was severely damaged during the war. Rufina Loggiato, which is built of thick
stone walls that are characteristic of the Tuscan style, is one of the apartments that surrounds the grand Castello Rufina. The apartment and the property have been
furnished with many elegant period pieces and modern conveniences.
The
Cerchi family lived in Castello Rufina for several generations in the
twelfth
century, before moving to Florence. The chapel, which is still in
existence, is
dedicated to Blessed Emiliana dei Cerchi, whose mortal remains lie in
the
church of Santa Croce in Florence. The memory of the powerful feudal
dynasty of
the Cerchi still hangs in the air.
The
