Villa Pognana is a charming villa built in the Country Liberty style of
the late 1800's - 1930's with equally charming decoration and
furnishings. Every window of the villa offers remarkable
views of Lake Como and of Lenno across the lake where George
Clooney has recently purchased a handsome villa. The tiny shore
village of Pognana is just a short walk down the cobbled path (a true
feeling of old Italy) and it offers a post office, grocery shop and
cafe. In the summer, there is also ferry service from
Pognana to other villages on the lake. The schedule is posted at
the ferry house.

Built on three levels (180 square
meters), Villa Pognana is a cozy romantic house whose interior reflects
the atmosphere of an ancient holiday country house. It sends you back
to a time when everything was more simple and life's rhythms were more
lyrical. The furnishings are comfortable and simple with some
nice antiques. The sitting room and dining room walls are painted in
soft apricot. The floor is antique with red, gray and white
hexagonal tiles, which are typical for the area. On the upper
floor, the well polished wooden floors gleam.
The villa is nicely equipped with a satellite television, washing machine, dishwasher, oven and dryer. For an additional fee,
advance grocery shopping and porter service are available.
The ground floor features a
sitting room, a fully equipped and newly renovated kitchen with
dishwasher and washing machine and a dining room with fireplace.
There is a mezzanine with a bathroom.
On the first floor there are two
double bedrooms with lake view, and upstairs at the second mid floor
you have another bathroom.
On the second floor there are two
double bedrooms, both with lake view.
Downstairs there is a typical
grotto, as the house is built on rocks.
The outdoor areas of the villa are
special given the panoramic view and poetic
atmosphere. There is an attractive garden where guests
can enjoy outdoor meals under a pergola, a sunny patio, and a vegetable
garden with tomatoes and zucchini. The garden has a variety
of trees that thrive in this mild microclimate such as palms, a fig
tree, rose and bay bushes, and of course the perennial rosemary
bush so dear to Italy.
Please note: To reach the villa, you
will park on the road above and walk down a path of about 200 meters
with flights of steps. The steps are quite steep and of cobbled
stone, and are therefore not suitable for guests with walking
difficulties. The keyholder, Vittorio, is a very amiable and
muscular man and will help with your luggage. This is why it
is a good idea to call him as soon as you know your arrival time so
that he can be ready and waiting to welcome you.
The lake is about 100 meters from
the villa, down the same path that takes you to the rental. The
closest restaurant is a ten minute walk away. There are a tennis
court, boat hire and swimming pool in the vacation resort La Cava, also
a ten minute walk (only in summer).
The bus
stop for Como is directly in front of the bar in Pognana. The journey
to Como takes about half an hour. A visit to the town of Como is
a pleasant contrast to the peace and tranquility of the villa. In
Como, elegance surrounds you: straightforward architecture, elegant
shops, stylish, wood-paneled cafés and restaurants and of course
several beautiful museums await your visit.
Furthermore the town of Como is a worldwide leader in silk
production. Even private customers will have the unique
opportunity to buy material, scarves or ties directly from the
manufacturers in Como. Como has a railway station where you can
take a quick train ride to Milan. Villa Pognana is ideally placed
for numerous excursions in the beautiful pre-alpine countryside or to
Bellagio - also known as the pearl of the lake.
